About Department
Kanhiyalal Maniklal Munshi Institute of Hindi and Linguistics, one of the oldest institutes of India, was initially visualized as 'AGRA UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF HINDI STUDTES'. Later it was named after the erstwhile Governor of Uttar Pradesh, His Excellency Kanhiya Lal Maniklal Munshi, also a well- Known Gujarati novelist. The Institute was established with a view to fostering and promoting higher studies and research in various academics fields, with Hindi being the focus language. The decision to establish such an institute at Agra was taken in a Conference of Vice-chancellors at Luck now in 1953 to the effect that the Agra University which was an affiliating university should have an Institute of Hindi where scholars of Hindi and non-Hindi areas could co-operate to further the progress of Hindi as National Language.
In the words of Shri K.M. Munshi, "The lovers and scholars of Hindi should concentrate on developing the range and power of Hindi; that higher studies in Hindi must be based on comparative study of Indian languages and literatures, that its strengths and elasticity, rooted in Sanskrit must be strengthened by a core study of that great language."
The Institute was inaugurated by the erstwhile governor of Uttar Pradesh Shri Kanhiya lal Maniklal Mushi on December 14, 1953.
The foundation stone of the Institute was laid on the same day by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Govind Vallabh pant and teaching at the Institute began in July 1956.
Since then K.M. Institute of Hindi and Linguistics has done much in the field of Hindi language and literature. It has emerged as a pioneer institute of the country, not only in the field of Hindi but in other fields like Sanskrit, linguistics. European languages.
